Pros
+ It seems like I run into a new surpise every few months. Just as I think first VideoBox and VideosZ, then Adult Movie Club and DownloadPass and then VideoHub plus perhaps a few others, must surely be about the best and largest of the multi-niche DVD download sites, I run into yet another strong competitor in this apparantly rather crowded category.
In terms of size, Adult Rated is currently only second to VideoBox (well, depends on what I may or may not run into in another couple of months of course), with a highly impressive 1898 downloadable DVDs (VideoBox is at 2244 at the time of writing)
+ Aside from already being a seriously large site, two new full DVDs are added to the collection every day
+ One of the only (or at least very few) DVD download sites to match the incredibly low membership price VideoBox is known for. And they are using the same structure with an optional "premium" membership as well (still very cheap), giving you access to a version of most videos that looks significantly better than the regular "high" quality
+ Content crossover is seen often on these sites, as they often license DVD content from at least some of the same studios, but Adult Rated appears to have quite a lot of movies I don't recall having seen at any of the other DVD download sites (the huge pay per view site AEBN possibly excluded).
As I think I mentioned in another review though, whether these movies are more interesting than the ones some of the other sites have but Adult Rated lacks, is entirely a matter of personal opinion of course (some of the more "unusual" movies at Adult Rated includes around 30 rather extreme German fisting and fetish DVDs, don't think I've seen that on any of the other sites). But just the size of this collection definately makes it one to check out
+ Good video quality on most of the content, three wmv and an mpeg version for most scenes, the best of them 512x384, 800-1000 kbit with the regular membership and a really great fourth 640x480, 2300 kbit wmv version if you opt for the premium membership (on one of their info pages they actually say it should be 720x540, 2200 kbit, but none of the videos I downloaded had a resolution higher than 640x480).
I've based the quality score on the regular membership, as I did with VideoBox
+ In addition to those regular video formats, there's also an iPod and a PSP version for most movies
+ Nice looking and very user friendly site design, as is usually the case on these DVD sites. Lacking the most advanced scene and partial scene selection features of VideoBox, but that's hardly a deal breaker. Especially since Adult Rated makes up for this by adding a very neat advanced search system where you can search on sub niches (eg. "Anal - Double Anal Penetration"), clothing, scene setting and the "physical features" of the ladies. I was a bit sceptical with regards to how well they had bothered to label every scene on the nearly 1900 DVDs, but the search tests I did provided proper results
+ Screenshot gallery section. A drop down menu lets you select a DVD to view screenshots from, I'm not entirely sure how many DVDs are included though, as counting the items in that menu was a bit of a pain.
Additionally, this section of the site apparantly had some trouble figuring out I was logged in (I tried in both Opera and Internet Explorer), so I could only see preview pics in a limited size. Don't know what the hell was going on there as I was able to download videos (and visit the personal "favourites" page) from other parts of the site without any trouble
Cons
- We might be moving into the territory of personal opinions again here, but I think that Adult Rated might be trying to cover a bit too much ground in terms of variety, at the expense of offering sometimes a surprisingly low number of scenes with even very popular pornstars. I think it's safe to say I would have preferred some additional movies with popular ladies at the expense of categories like "fat obese sex", "pregnant women", "she-males", "pissing" and "gay" (though several of the other DVD sites do tend to offer at leat a couple of those or similar things as well).
But to each their own of course
- Poor choice of preview screenshots for many of the old movies. It's pretty damn hard to tell if a scene is worth downloading if all you've got to go by is six screen captures, all seemingly taken within seconds of each other with the scene barely started yet. This was so much of an annoyance to me (especially considering how well designed the site otherwise is) that I was bordering on knocking an extra point off the navigation/design score
- Limited video options (only a segmented wmv version, occasionally mpeg as well) on the oldest content, and no extra high quality version for those videos if you have a premium membership.
After having flipped through a whole lot of movie pages I would say that this probably applies to, and it's a rough estimate, around a third of the total number of DVDs. That's probably acceptable
- Trouble with the screenshot gallery as mentioned above. Not that I honestly care though, when I can watch the actual DVDs instead
