2nd Look, October 7 2007
When I did my original review of DownloadPass over a year ago, it hadn't had a content update in over a year, but since then the site has been picked up again and it's now one of the larger DVD download sites with more than 2,200 DVDs and three new added every day.
As such, and given the low price plus inclusion of the Mega Site Pass sites and a few site design improvements, Download Pass might very well be a better choice now than VideosZ and Adult Movie Club (the scores I've handed out for some of these DVD download sites aren't really particularly good indicators at this point I'll admit, as I probably started out setting them a bit too high back in 2005 and early to mid 2006. So just go with my review text instead).
That said, with VideoBox still firmly in the lead in all areas (volume, video quality, price - a tie with DownloadPass, and the excellent new navigation and user functionality features they are still piling on their new site interface), so as great as some of these other sites are - now including DownloadPass - it's just difficult if not impossible for me to recommend any of them over VideoBox.
I've increased several of the scores significantly, so the total score for DownloadPass is now up from 80 to 92.
Original review
Pros
+ A very large collection of downloadable hardcore DVDs in more than 30 different porn niches (the still modest score in quantity is a result of the incredibly high standards set by the sites in direct competition with DownloadPass)
+ Nice site design with plenty of browsing and search features to help you find what you're looking for
+ Better than average video quality (and two lower options as well), but not exactly great either. A number of the scenes I downloaded were also strangly pixilated, much more than they ought to be at the afterall pretty decent resolution and bitrate (guess you can file this last part under cons instead)
+ Scenes can be downloaded in either a single file or seven partials
+ A load of video stills with every scene, although I personally don't see much point in offering those
+ Low price
Cons
- 660 DVDs is by no means a small collection, but after they stopped updating DownloadPass over a year ago (the last few updates added nearly a couple of hundred new DVDs altogether though, so there's of course a chance they could do the same thing again), they effectively lost the battle to direct competitors like VideoBox, VideosZ and now the newer site Adult Movie Club as well.
The (discounted) membership price is still only matched by VideoBox though, but the main reason there's still any serious reason to pay attentition to DownloadPass, is that it's included in the Mega Site Pass network
- I had trouble getting downloads to work in Internet Explorer. Clicking the download button (there's a "watch" button as well) would start playing the video in the browser's integrated media window. Downloads are working in my usual browser of choice though, Opera, and I imagine the same would be the case with Firefox. I wouldn't rule out some changes to settings might make it work properly in IE as well, but I played around with what I could find without success.
Given that downloads are working in the other browsers (not to mention the fact that there are two distinct "download" and "watch" options), I imagine there's a good chance this could be a problem on my end though. I just can't find it.
- I could only get one download (in Opera) running at a time
