Pros
+ Yappo.com is a new (just over a year old), very large pay-per-view/download site, ready to take up the battle against the giant AEBN as well as other large pay-per-view porn sites (and to some extent also the smaller but typically better value for money DVD download sites like VideoBox)
+ Currently more than 32,000 DVDs from a reported 750+ porn studios. Updates are also fast, to say the least, with sometimes as much as a hundred new DVDs in a single day
+ A very powerful site interface with great navigation and search features, as you would expect from a site of this kind. A bit better than AEBN in some areas in my opinion, thanks to a slightly more efficient site layout, including larger (and more) scene thumbnail screenshots, as well as a pretty neat large image pop up when you hover your mouse pointer over a DVD cover and certain other page items.
Adult Rental had (and has) some of the same strenghts when I reviewed it a couple of years ago, but it was a bit clunky in certain other areas (that might have been improved by now, I only took a brief look for the recent short update of that review).
On the other hand, at Yappo I find myself missing a few very useful abilities, like being able to add models, studios, searches etc. to favourites/bookmarks, rather than just individual movies. Finding more movies from a specific DVD series isn't quite as straightforward as it is at AEBN either, requiring you to do a manual search rather than merely clicking a link on a movie page. AEBN is also better at serving up the search results you want, and only the ones you want, when you eg. search on a pornstar name
+ No less than five different video qualities for streaming. Ranging from dial-up friendly to something they call HD. They are exaggerating a bit on the last one (which should be obvious from the fact alone that still only very few porn movies are actually being shot in HD quality), but at 800x600, 2000 kbit the quality is certainly very good, and the best of any of the pay-per-view sites I've seen, though you'll obviously need a very fast connection to stream the highest quality without constant buffering pauses (I wasn't quite able to pull it off on my 10 Mbit line - though I really should have without too much trouble, but time of day, geographic location, route to the servers etc. can obviously play a part if your connection speed is sitting just on the verge of being able to manage it).
I tried one of the 7-day movie downloads as well, as expected the quality here was also 800x600, 2000 kbit. No buffering pauses (of course), but an initial 1.7 GB download on the movie I rented. Which didn't take more than half an hour on my connection though (again indicating that streaming a single scene as described above should have been possible, so I'll give it a shot again later)
Cons
- As mentioned above, I did miss a few specific interface features I regularly find quite useful at AEBN
- Not that 32,000+ DVDs is exactly what you would call a small collection, but comparative searches with AEBN on some of my favourite pornstars did leave Yappo in the dust. I typically use and view AEBN as this huge universal porn library I visit when I'm looking for nearly every movie a particular pornstar has ever made, and Yappo wasn't quite up for that task on several of the sample searches I ran.
But of course, when you only pay for what you watch rather than a monthly membership fee, then there's no harm in using several sites as you see fit. I have a feeling I'll be doing that from now on
- I'll say here what I've said in my other two pay-per-view reviews. Pay-per-view generally isn't cheap compared to regular monthly membership sites if you're looking for the most bang for your buck.
DVD download sites like VideoBox and VideosZ still win in that department, simply because you get several thousand DVDs for a single low monthly fee. And you can keep them, unlike the streaming or DRM protected videos at pay-per-view sites.
That said, I still find myself heading to a pay-per-view site (until now AEBN, now possibly Yappo as a regular alternative) whenever I'm looking for something very specific, simply because of the immense volume on these sites
